Recipe: Breastfeeding Smoothie (plantbased, vegan, high raw)

Hey! So breastfeeding has been going great! My milk supply is abundant this time around and Baby S feeds very well. I didn't realize until this time around, that my supply with Little A wasn't as good. Yes, I nursed her for 3 years, and it lasted! But, she ate very often and for a very long time. She would cry a lot as a baby while nursing which makes me think she was struggling to get enough milk out. Even when I would pump, I never got much in one sitting. Also, I was struggling with Ulcerative Colitis at the time, which probably didn't help my supply since my body was constantly in defense mode. I never had to wear breastpads and never had leaking issues. This time around I have found the opposite to be true and Baby S eats for short periods of times and seems satisfied afterwards.

I come across lists of foods that are great for breastfeeding all the time so I decided to put my favorites together for a nutritious, filling, caloric, milk increasing smoothie. This is not medical advice, this is just some ideas to increase milk supply and make for quality milk. Please also be advised that if any of these foods impact your baby negatively, please leave them out and avoid.

I try to eat the healthiest foods to make sure Baby S is getting the best! This smoothie will  ensure I am making quality milk. Of course you can enjoy this even if you aren't breastfeeding. Little A loves it as well!

 

 

Breastfeeding Smoothie 

(plantbased, vegan, high raw)

1 tbsp flaxseeds
1 tbsp coconut oil
1/2 cup of oats
1 scoop of Sunwarrior Warrior Blend (I like the chocolate)
4 large romaine lettuce leaves
5 chlorella tablets
2 frozen bananas
2 dates
One cup of Nettle tea cooled over night

Add all ingredients to blender and blend!

Here is some info on the ingredients I used and why they are great while nursing.

Flax seeds: essential fatty acids, nutritious, vitamins, minerals, amino acids.

Coconut oil: contains lauric acids which is also found in breastmilk.

Oats: contains iron, protein, fiber. Said to increase milk supply

Sunwarrior Protein Warrior Blend: this contains fenugreek which can increase milk supply not to mention the obvious.. protein.

Romaine lettuce (or any leafy green): contains folic acid, vitamin A, calcium.

Chlorella: said to purify breastmilk and makes for clean milk for baby. Plus contains iron, chlorophyll, vitamin A, calcium, and lots of essential nutrients.

Bananas: magnesium, vitamin c, potassium

Dates:  calcium rich, iron, filling, caloric

Nettle tea: Nettles stimulate breastmilk, help with anemia following childbirth, high in iron.
