How Baby S Got Her Name

August 5, 2015

Today I wanted to share the story of how Siena got her name...

Last Summer when I was going through a set back after my last surgery, my Dad and I went into the city to try to figure out why I was bleeding from my surgery "hole". We had to wait all day between my appointment and when I was scheduled for a cat scan. While waiting we went into a Catholic Church that my family has been going to for years. Since Sloan Kettering is right next to Weill Cornell, this church had become a place of comfort. My aunt, cousin, and both grandparents have been to Sloan for cancer treatments (and are all still alive and well), and during my surgeries, T and my family have gone there for prayer. When my Dad and I left the church, I noticed prayer cards so I grabbed one. I looked at it and read about the saint and put it in my pocket. When I got home, I put it in a drawer and completely forgot about it...

Fast forward 6 months later after we found out that our baby would be another girl, T and I were bouncing names off of each other and he said he liked the name Siena. Instantly it felt right, I knew that would be our  baby's name. About a week after deciding that Siena would be the name (spelled with one "N" like the city in Italy), I came across the card. I picked it up and I was in shock. The card was for "Saint Catherine of Siena", clear as day was the city/name Siena. Saint Catherine was a feminist of her time, she was a patron for nurses and helped healed the sick when women weren't allowed to do such a thing. What a sign! Especially after all I went through to heal myself.

So that's how Siena got her name. As for Jade, I love the stone (and surprisingly don't own one!) and T really liked the name.
